"It is only by generating insight which sees through delusion that we can become liberated" the Dalai Lama, Dzogchen, pg 129
In Soto Zen the word Shikantaza means "Just sit". It was
Dogen's way to point to a state of mind where the practice of meditation was
itself perfection. There is no goal to be attained beyond practice itself. For a practical introduction click here. Just to be clear, a number of the links on this page are not Soto sites but have great content of interest to those of us who meditate. This site has chosen not to be sectarian.
Shikantaza is also my discussion group identity on Beliefnet and Tricycle.
Why build a new Buddhism site? Because it augments my practice when I'm traveling and
provides a place to post useful resources. We've spoken a lot on Beliefnet about
the limitations of online media, but it looks to me as though the community of practice
is thriving here. Scholars can debate the authenticity of "bookstore buddhist practice"
if they like, but I'd rather spend my time helping others enter the stream or deepen their
existing practice. By the way, I am not a monk, nor do I have authorization to teach, so
please don't refer to me as your roshi or this site as your sangha. But I do have a solid
familiarity with Buddhist literature and a willingness to share. I also have a degree in
the Study of Religion from UCLA (1985, Magna Cum Laude), so on an academic level perhaps
this site can provide information and support for your practice.
This site re-launches with a list of readings on Sept 11th from various online
sources I trust, some Buddhist and some not. Unfortunately some of the original articles have disappeared and I've had to reduce the list. If your favorite teachers aren't included
here send me links and I'll post them as time permits. The BPF and Choices pages are
collections.
I'd appreciate your feedback whether you find this useful or not. That's how we grow.
Peace is every step,
Shik
